Financial Update - November 2009

Wow, November is going by SO fast!!

If you have been reading our financial updates (HERE, HERE), you know we started our debt snowball in September. Here are some of our goals:

Baby Step #2 – Debt Snowball
Credit Card #1 – September 2009 - DONE-9/11
Credit Card #2 – December 2009 - DONE-11/23
Car Loan – September 2010
Student Loans – March 2011

Our goal was to have CC#2 paid off by December. Well, luckily, we were able to pay this completely off in November. So Brian and I officially have no more credit card debt!! Yay!! It is such a great feeling to not owe any CC companies money! And with the debt snowball, all that money can go to paying off other things.

The beauty of the "debt snowball" is to start with your smallest debt, and once that is paid off, the money you were using to pay that off can now go to the next biggest thing. So all we have left is 1)Car Loan & 2)Student/School Loans. Actually our school loans aren't that much, but we don't have to start paying these off for a year or so, so we decided to start on the car...get that paid off, then start on the school loans. It's going to be a great feeling paying a HUGE chunk off on our car each month!

Total Debt Paid Off: 30.53%

Walgreens Trip 11/19 - Profit $7.23

So I went to Walgreens today for several reasons:
1) I have a big break in my day on Thursdays, so I like to use my time wisely.
2) I had $29 in RR expiring, so I needed to use those up.
3) I haven't been to Walgreens yet this week.
4) I didn't bring my lunch & I didn't want to spend any money OOP for it.
(it's hard to rationalize eating at Subway for $6, when I can cook dinner for 2 for less than $2.00)

Nothing in the ad really interested me this week, however I didn't really feel like rolling the RRs. There were some good medicine deals, but I just didn't feel like getting $30 worth of medicine, so I got some things that I wanted or needed, and some things that yielded another RR. I had to get a little creative...

It took me a while to get all my transactions figured out. In fact, I went through the store not really knowing what I was going to get, so I just threw some stuff in my cart, wrote down the price and tried to figure out how I could use my RRs and still spend very little OOP. I went to go check out, did 2 transactions, did more shopping, came back and did 2 more transactions. I needed to break it up so I could figure out my math correctly.

Here's what I came up with:
Transaction #1
1 Aussie Shampoo - $2.99, get $2.00 RR wyb 1

1 Lunchable - $2.99 (not pictured - I ate this for lunch)
1 Dole Oranges Cup - $1.69 (not pictured - I ate this for lunch)
1 Cheez Its - $.50
- Used $10.00 RR

Total OOP - $.02
Got back - $1.00 RR & $2.00 RR
************************************************
Transaction #3
4 Nexxus Mousse - 2/$5.00
- Used $4.00 Walgreens November coupon booklet (took off $10.00)
1 Ricola Mixed Berry 19ct - $1.00, get $1.00 wyb 1
- Used $.50 Walgreens coupon
1 72ct Paper Plates - $.89 with in ad coupon
1 DP 2L - $1.00 with in ad coupon
1 Got2Be Gel - $3.99
- Used $4.00 RR & $2.00 RR

Total OOP - $.38
Got back - $1.00 RR
************************************************
Transaction #4
2 Nexxus Mousse - 2/$5.00
- Used $4.00 Walgreens November coupon booklet (took off $5.00)
1 Ricola Mixed Berry 19ct - $1.00, get $1.00 wyb 1

Got back - $1.00 RR
************************************************
Grand total spent - $.77
Remaining RRs - $8.00
Total Profit - $7.23

...so I like to put things into perspective. Had I not used any MFQs, Walgreens Qs, or RRs, I would have spent $76.73.

Go HERE for this week's deal & coupon matchups for Walgreens.

Green Bean Casserole - on a budget!!

In light of my recent post, and in thinking about Thanksgiving, I thought I'd share a great deal on a simple recipe!

One of my favorite dishes is GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE!!

Here is how you can make this dish with spending little out of pocket!

*I usually make mine with 2 cans of soup & 3 cans of green beans...we have a large family*

3 cans of green beans at Target (details HERE) = $.60

2 cans of Campbell's Mushroom soup at Target = $.48
*Deal*
Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup - $.49
- Use $1/4 Printable Coupon
= $.24 each

I know people like to put different things on the top of the dish, like fried onions. These can vary in price, but typically run around $2-$4, depending on the size. Go HERE for French's Fried Onion MFQ. Or you could try an off-brand.

*UPDATE: I totally forgot, French's Fried Onions 2.8oz are $.99 with in ad coupon at Walgreens this week. There is a $.50 printable and a $.50 MFQ from the 11/8 SS insert, making them $.49 each. I'd probably need to get 2-3 of these for the size dish I make.

Thanks, Tracey for the reminder!

So...
$.60 - Green Beans
$.48 - Soup
$1.47 - Fried Onions (updated, see above)

= $2.55 total

This general serves 10-12 people, which is ~$.21 per serving. Not bad!!

Target: Del Monte Canned Vegetables ONLY $.20!

Target has a GREAT deal on Del Monte canned vegetables! They are currently priced around $.45 each.

Buy 8 cans @ $.45 = $3.60
- Use the $1/8 coupon from the 11/15 RP
- AND Use the $1/6 Target coupon
= $.20 per can!

**Don't forget to bring in your own "green" bag for a $.05 bag credit (aka $.05 off your total!)

This would be a great time to stock up!

Also, there are tons of places that are offering deals like "bring xx # of cans, get $5.00 off your next order..." My husband just told me that you can get a free ticket to the UTA Basketball game when you bring 4 canned goods. So...$.80 to go to a basketball game?? That's some pretty cheap entertainment! And lots of schools are having canned food drives. So stock up while they are at an amazing price!

J C Penney $10 off $25 coupon

Getting ready for Christmas? J C Penney just released a new coupon. Save $10 off any $25 purchase. Valid through 11/23.

Time to get-ta shoppin'!!

Also this coming week, Kroger will have select Hasbro card and board games on sale, buy 1 get 1 free.

Remember - when you pair a BOGO sale with a BOGO coupon, you get both for FREE.

Operation Christmas Child 2009

Ever since I was little, I remember being so excited to buy Christmas stuff for someone else. I can remember going to the mall in November, and grabbing an "angel" from the Angel Tree. Then I would go to Wal-Mart and buy items for somebody. My mom always says, "There are people less privileged than myself, so be grateful for what I have."

Every year, through our church home, Bethesda Community Church, we participate in Operation Christmas Child.

Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations worldwide through simple, gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God’s love.

I love doing this every year, and now that I have developed quite a "stash" from couponing, I am able to give more than I have in the past. In fact, I was able to fill 3 boxes for me and my husband, and 4 boxes for my mom and dad.

Here is a picture of some of the items we put in our boxes:I had tons of hi-lighters, pens, pencils, writing pads, batteries, lip gloss & chapstick, bars of soap, deodorant, toothpastes, toothbrushes, and little, fun knick-knacks.

We were able to make 1 boy & 2 girl boxes :)Then we did go buy some socks and a toy of some sort. I just love doing stuff like this, and I am so grateful that I have the knowledge, skill and tenacity to stock up on these free or cheap items I get from couponing, so I can give to other people.

If you have a "plethora" of items that you would like to give away, consider doing it through an organization like Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. You will touch the lives of many children!

Before I did these transactions, 1 of the cashiers who was on her lunch break did an Almay makeup transaction. All week the Almay makeup is “buy 1, get 1 50% off. Now, I had heard and read that there was a glitch in the programming, and the makeup was actually ringing up “buy 1, get 1 FREE.” I thought “surely corporate would have this fixed by Thursday.” So I didn’t even bother worrying about doing this deal. Well, after I saw the cashier do it, I asked about it, and she said that they were still ringing up B1G1FREE!! So…I decided to partake! AND…they had MFQs for me to use! Hehe

Here’s how it went:
Transaction #3:
4 Almay Mascara @ $6.99 each
2 Almay Pure Blends Foundation @ $9.99 each

-2 B1G1Free Mascara @ $6.99 each (the register automatically took these off)
-1 B1G1Free Foundation @ $9.99
-Used (6) $1.00 MFQs
-$4.00 Almay 1 coat Mascara WAGS coupon (found at front of store – took off $16.00)

Total OOP - $1.05
Got back - $10.00 RR
Total Profit - $8.95

I was SO excited about all this (essentially) FREE makeup + profit! So I called my mom, told her and asked her if she wanted me to get her some. And of course, she said YESSssssssssssss!!! Therefore…transaction #4 –

I asked the cashier if she had anymore MFQs for me to use, and she only had 3. Bummer. BUT – I was doing some calculations, AND with the B1G1Free sale, and the $4.00 WAGS coupon for EACH mascara purchased, it’s like I would get -$.50 for each mascara purchased. So to compensate for the lack of MFQs, I just purchased more mascara.

Transaction #4:
6 Almay Mascara @ $6.99 each
2 Almay Pure Blends Foundation @ $9.99 each

-3 B1G1Free Mascara @ $6.99 each (the register automatically took these off)
-1 B1G1Free Foundation @ $9.99
-Used (3) $1.00 MFQs
-$4.00 Almay 1 coat Mascara WAGS coupon (found at front of store – took off $24.00)
-$1.00 RR & $2.00 RR

Total OOP - $1.04
Got back - $10.00 RR
Total Profit - $8.96
************************************************
Target Transaction #1:
4 Archer Farms Desserts - $.99 each
2 Windex - $2.54 each
2 Scrubbing Bubbles - $2.54 each

Coupons Used:
-(4) $1.00 off AF desserts (adjusted to $.99)
-(2) $.55 Windex MFQ
-$2.00 off 2 Scrubbing Bubbles
-$5.00 Target GC wyb 4 Windex/SC products

Total OOP - $7.06
Got back - $5.00 Target GC
************************************************
GRAND TOTALS FOR TODAY’S WALGREENS & TARGET TRIP!!

Total OOP - $10.96
Remaining RRs - $31.00 + $5.00 MIR (plus the $5.00 Target GC)

Make Money Selling Books!!

Sell Used Books Online - Quick Cash, Free Shipping, Free Quotes!
Well I think Christmas season has officially started.

I heard on the radio that stores and malls are putting up Christmas decorations and sales EARLY this year in hopes to bring in a little more profit. Sales are down and they want people to BUY!!

So here's a quick and easy way to make a little extra money for the Christmas season!

One of the ways I make a little extra cash on the side is selling my old textbooks...and books in general. Between my husband and myself, we have a lot of books that frankly - need to be gone! You could sell them on Craiglist or Ebay, BUT there is a better website - Cash4Books.net.

The site is very simple! You just go and enter the ISBN #s, then you can see how much Cash4Books.net will pay for the book, or even if they aren't buying it at all. Some of my older college books that I thought I would get nothing out of, I ended up getting around $5.00 for. Hey! Better than nothing!

One of the best things about Cash4Books.net is, they pay for shipping! Unlike Craigslist, Amazon and Ebay where you pay for shipping out of pocket - Cash4Books.net has a shipping label you can print directly from their website!

AND - they deposit the money into your bank account VERY quickly.

I have had TONS of success from using Cash4Books.net, received a good amount of cash back, AND de-cluttered my closet! Yay for getting rid of old textbooks and unused books!
